Building on the four provocative projects of the ParkingPLUS design challenge (Long Island Index, 2013-14), students enrolled in the CUNY Bachelors of Architecture Program Fall 2015 Design Studio brought the paradigm to two new sites, stops along the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the hamlets of VALLEY STREAM and BALDWIN. The two communities were selected in Nassau County’s Sustainable Communities grant-funded study of the potential for Transit-Supportive Development (TSD). The 10 students worked to design innovative schemes combining structured parking, public/civic space, and other “plus” uses (housing, retail, community services, recreation) on available parking lots. The designs aim to function both as specific examples of building type, and as prototypes for similar conditions at other sites.
