And the winners are….

The Long Island Section is pleased to announce the winners of the Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarships for 2011. This year’s winners are Nicholas Dickerson and Jonathan Keyes.

Nicholas is from Mattituck and is currently a full time Graduate Student at the University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

Jonathan is a Project Manager for the Town of Babylon Affordable Housing Program and is pursuing a Master of Urban Planning at NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service.

The scholarship provides $1,500 to cover the cost of the APA National Conference, at least one mobile workshop and expenses.  The recipients will make a short presentation at an upcoming LI Section event to be announced.

Please be advised that the Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarship Luncheon and “ Reclaiming Commercial Strips” Randall Arendt Workshop – originally scheduled for March 18th has been postponed.  If you have already sent payment it will be returned immediately (or if you paid using PayPal, your account will be reimbursed).

Please join us on March 18th, 2011 for the Annual Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarship Luncheon, featuring speaker Randall Arendt, a nationally acclaimed author. The 2011 Scholarship winners will be announced.

The Luncheon will be followed by Randall Arendt’s hands-on workshop “Reclaiming Commercial Strips”.  The workshop addresses the aging building stock along commercial corridors and how to effectively take advantage of redevelopment opportunities.

This workshop will focus on practical ways of reclaiming existing commercial corridors characterized by visual blight, traffic congestion and higher accident rates. Multiple strategies blending the twin disciplines of Conservation Design and New Urbanism are discussed for rebuilding these corridors, gradually increasing their functionality and attractiveness.

These strategies offer significant opportunities for commercial and mixed-use redevelopment, particularly in areas with existing infrastructure, thereby increasing the viability of businesses, service providers, and current /future public transit lines.

This workshop features a presentation illustrating progressive approaches to transforming commercial corridors, emphasizing multi-story mixed-use buildings, affordable housing, public transit possibilities, shade tree planting, design standards, signage, native landscaping, improved circulation patterns, parking lot orientation, stormwater infiltration/recharge, night sky protection, and solar features.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE (Note: This is a revised announcement – please note that the scholarship is now open to planners with up to 6 years of experience and we have extended the deadline).

The Long Island Section is pleased to announce that we will be awarding the Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarships to two entry-level planners (less than six years out of college or up to six years in a professional planning position) or college students in a planning-related major, to attend the APA National Planning Conference April 9-12, 2011 in Boston.

The Scholarship will pay for conference registration, APA membership for one year, and some additional expenses.  In the spirit of Mr. Kunz, a Long Island planner and mobile workshop enthusiast, the scholarship will also fund attendance at one mobile workshop.

If you are an entry level planner working on Long Island, or planning graduate student from Long Island and wish to apply for a scholarship to attend the 2011 APA Boston conference, email your resume and a statement explaining why you are interested to APALongIsland@gmail.comThe new deadline for submissions is Monday,  March 7, 2011.
