Plenary Sessions
We are honored to have our keynote presentation by Hon. Amanda Burden FAICP Director, New York City Department of City Planning Chair, City Planning Commission, on Vision 2020: New York City Comprehensive Waterfront Plan and its implications for future planning and design of the waterfront. Followed by a panel discussion by professionals who have represented the APA, AIA, and ASLA during the advisory process and will describe key issues and explore Vision 2020’s new opportunities for planners, architects, and landscape architects.

Panelists:

  • Donald Burns, AICP, APA Metro Chapter, President (Moderator)
  • Bonnie Harken, AIA, President, Nautilus International
  • Rick Bell, FAIA, Executive Director, NY Chapter, AIA
  • Susannah Drake, ASLA, Principal, dlandstudio

Additionally, the second morning Plenary Panel is titled Robert Moses: Visionary or Villain? Robert Caro’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, “The Power Broker: and the Fall of New York” (1974), and the revisionist work, edited by Hillary Ballon and Kenneth T. Jackson, “Robert Moses and the Modern City: The Transformation of New York” (2007), portray contrasting views of Moses. So, in your view, was he a visionary, who shaped this metropolis more than any other person in the 20th century, or in the process was he a villain by demolishing buildings and relocating people, in some instances?

The Village of Port Jefferson is seeking a qualified planner with code review and writing,
economic development and SEQR experience to formulate a revitalization plan for Upper Port
Jefferson’s commercial district and adjacent professional and residential areas. Located on the
north shore of Long Island within Brookhaven Township, Upper Port Jefferson lies south of
North Country Road and north of the LIRR tracks and Port Jefferson Station. Work is
anticipated to span approximately 4 months and will follow an accelerated time schedule.

Respondents must address a Request for Consultant Services that is due 7/29/11. This
Request can be obtained from Denise Harrington at 631-473-4744 or dharrington@portjeff.com.
The Village anticipates that this Upper Port Redevelopment Plan will build upon existing
recommendations from the Draft 2030 Comprehensive Plan Update and include specific
measures to be implemented. While this consultant will make recommendations as to the
necessary features of the successful revitalization of Upper Port; the emphasis of the
consultant’s work will be to provide the specific ingredients needed for the rebirth of Upper Port.
Below the Village has identified potential constituents of the Upper Port revitalization. Yet, it is
the consultant’s responsibility to identify the most important revitalization tools, assess their
usefulness in Upper Port and provide the most pertinent ones in a format so they can be
actualized by the Village in a timely manner.

As of early July 2011, the Town of Smithtown is embarking on a comprehensive effort of economic development.  Part of the strategy is to hire two entry level planners to free up time of senior staff to focus more on economic development planning.    Responsibilities of the new planners will include permit review for planning board or board of appeals applications, the preparation of miscellaneous reports and correspondence, site inspection, and assistance to the public regarding development matters.

Appointed planners must take the civil service exam at such time as it is offered and must do well enough to be reachable.  The starting salaries are about $38,000.

For additional information contact the Smithtown Planning Department at 631-360-7540 or smithtownplanning@tosgov.com.
