As of early July 2011, the Town of Smithtown is embarking on a comprehensive effort of economic development. Part of the strategy is to hire two entry level planners to free up time of senior staff to focus more on economic development planning. Responsibilities of the new planners will include permit review for planning board or board of appeals applications, the preparation of miscellaneous reports and correspondence, site inspection, and assistance to the public regarding development matters.
Appointed planners must take the civil service exam at such time as it is offered and must do well enough to be reachable. The starting salaries are about $38,000.
