On July 21, 2016, more than 30 members of the APA NY Metro Chapter participated in a LI Section-sponsored tour of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, located roughly 1.5 miles east of Orient Point.  The group left sunny Orient Point  via ferry and arrived on Plum Island for a morning of presentation and Q&A with representatives from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  The afternoon was spent touring the entire island with our guides from DHS.  A great day was had by all!  Check out some photos from the tour –

When: Monday, April 25, 5-7 PM

Where: Hofstra University Club, 225 Hofstra Blvd, Hempstead, NY 11550

This creative and forward-thinking book presents the results of a design studio at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in Fall, 2014, under the supervision of Harvard Prof. Daniel D’Oca. The studio, which was generously sponsored by the Horace and Amy Hagedorn Fund in the NY Community Trust, the Long Island Community Foundation, and the Rauch Foundation, invited graduate students of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and urban design to take stock of how Long Island is changing. Then, with advice from NCSS Executive Dean Lawrence Levy, who wrote a foreward to the book, the Harvard students used this research to work with community-based partners to help their communities confront today’s demographic and environmental realities.

The book launch will feature wine and hors d’oeuvres, brief introductory remarks from Dean Levy, Sol Marie Jones (Long Island Community Foundation), and Daniel D’Oca (Harvard Graduate School of Design), short presentations of projects from Harvard students, and a discussion with students from Hofstra’s Sustainability Studies program, moderated by Prof. Robert Brinkmann.

Books will be available for sale.

Admission is free and open to the public. Please RSVP by April 20, 2016 to Jackie.Geis@hofstra.edu.
