The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design cordially invite you to a book launch for The Storm, the Strife, and Everyday Life: Sea Changes in the Suburbs.

When: Monday, April 25, 5-7 PM

This creative and forward-thinking book presents the results of a design studio at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in Fall, 2014, under the supervision of Harvard Prof. Daniel D’Oca. The studio, which was generously sponsored by the Horace and Amy Hagedorn Fund in the NY Community Trust, the Long Island Community Foundation, and the Rauch Foundation, invited graduate students of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and urban design to take stock of how Long Island is changing. Then, with advice from NCSS Executive Dean Lawrence Levy, who wrote a foreward to the book, the Harvard students used this research to work with community-based partners to help their communities confront today’s demographic and environmental realities.

The book launch will feature wine and hors d’oeuvres, brief introductory remarks from Dean Levy, Sol Marie Jones (Long Island Community Foundation), and Daniel D’Oca (Harvard Graduate School of Design), short presentations of projects from Harvard students, and a discussion with students from Hofstra’s Sustainability Studies program, moderated by Prof. Robert Brinkmann.

Books will be available for sale.

For Immediate Release:  Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone Announces Lottery for Second Phase of Suffolk County Septic Demonstration Pilot Program:  Additional Homeowners to Receive Free State-of-the-Art Septic System to Reduce Nitrogen Pollution & Enhance Water Quality

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced a lottery which will be held for the second phase of the County’s Septic Demonstration Program for single family homeowners. Applications for the second lottery are due Friday, April 8, 2016, and winners will receive a free advanced wastewater treatment system – which includes free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years.  CLICK HERE for more information.

The APA LI Section is happy to announce that it will be hosting a Tour of Plum Island on July 21, 2016!  Tour is limited to APA members.

Plum Island is a unique place in the greater context of Long Island and represents one the more significant planning questions that it is part of the regional conversation. It is certainly one of the most significant federal properties in the area.  The tour will offer participants a better understanding of the Island’s history, facilities, geography, environment and place in the regional economy.

Please be advised that federal security clearance requirements apply, and tour registrants will be required to provide personal information to USDHS in advance.

Tour participants will leave from Orient Point via ferry and the estimated tour duration (travel included) is 7am – 2pm.  We will provide an exact start time in the next few weeks.

The Form Based Code Institute

FBC101 (ONLINE):  The ABC’s of Form Based Codes
An Introduction to Form-Based Coding

Participants who complete the entire 101 track will gain useful knowledge of what to expect from a coding process, how to structure a coding process, and some potential problems to avoid. This track fulfills all requirements for enrolling in FBCI’s two-day on-site advanced courses, FBC 201 (Urban Design and Placemaking) and FBC 301 (Formulating, Adopting, and Administering). Participants who successfully complete all three receive a certificate of completion from FBCI.
