The New York–Connecticut Sustainable Communities Consortium is a partnership working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies to create economic opportunity, housing options, transit and a better quality of life for you and your community.

Urbanized is a feature-length documentary about the design of cities, which looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design and features some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers. Over half the world’s population now lives in an urban area, and 75% will call a city home by 2050. But while some cities are experiencing explosive growth, others are shrinking. The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns. Yet much of the dialogue on these issues is disconnected from the public domain.

Who is allowed to shape our cities, and how do they do it? Unlike many other fields of design, cities aren’t created by any one specialist or expert. There are many contributors to urban change, including ordinary citizens who can have a great impact improving the cities in which they live. By exploring a diverse range of urban design projects around the world, Urbanizedframes a global discussion on the future of cities.

Urbanized is the third part of Gary Hustwit’s design film trilogy, joining Helvetica and Objectified.

The APA Long Island Section is pleased to announce the recipients of the Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarship for 2012.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients:

Tiffany-Ann Taylor, Lee Wellington and Michelle Young.

Tiffany-Ann is from Bay Shore and is currently a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in City & Regional Planning from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and is passionate about transportation and emergency management planning.

Lee is from Setauket, pursuing a joint-degree in law and urban planning from Pratt Institute and Brooklyn Law School, while actively participating and developing programs through the Pratt’s Center for Community Development.

Michelle is a graduate student in urban planning at Columbia University, holds a B.A. from Harvard in the History of Art & Architecture, and is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music. Michelle is a founder of  Untapped Cities website, envisioned to bridge the gap between academic practice and popular consumption of urbanism and architecture.

The scholarship provides $1,500 for each recipient to cover the cost of attending the APA National Conference.  The recipients will be formally announced at Annual Kunz Memorial   Scholarship Breakfast on March 23.

The APA Long Island Section Steering Committee would like to use this opportunity to thank all applicants for their interest in the Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarship and to encourage them to submit an application next year.

Who can participate?

Professional planners of all experience levels are encouraged to participate.  Interested mentors should have five or more years of professional planning experience while interested mentees should have less than four years of professional planning experience.  This round of the program is open solely to professional planners who have already completed graduate school. 

What are the program benefits?

Mentors gain the opportunity to:

• give back to the profession by supporting new planners
• expand their professional networks
• connect with the experiences of younger professionals
• hone their leadership skills
• increase their involvement in the APA New York Metro Chapter

 Mentees gain the opportunity to:

• discuss career goals with experienced professionals
• confer on professional development and long- and short-term professional goals
• discover what experienced and senior-level planners deal with on a day-to-day basis
• understand different subfields within the planning profession
• expand their professional networks

What is the time commitment?

• The program will kickoff at a meet-and-greet in early February 2012 (date/time TBD)
• We request that participants commit to the program for five months.  
• Participants have the option of corresponding via phone, email, or in person, but we recommend meeting at least once a month for the duration of the program.

The Long Island Section of American Planning Association’s (APA) NY Metro Chapter is pleased to announce that we will be awarding three Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarships this year.  The scholarships will enable awardees to attend the 2012 APA National Planning Conference, April 14^th – 17^th in Los Angeles, California.

Arthur H. Kunz was a Long Island planner who was deeply committed to preserving and enhancing Suffolk County by balancing its growth and development with environmental protection and played an integral part in Suffolk County’s development for almost 30 years.  He worked for the Nassau County Planning Commission from 1958 to 1969.  In 1969, he became Assistant Planning Director for the Suffolk County Department of Planning and Director in 1989.  Arthur Kunz was a straightforward and highly regarded man whose planning knowledge, commitment to public service, and professionalism improved the quality of life in Suffolk County.  Since 1994, the Long Island Section has been awarding planning scholarships in his memory.

Eligible applicants include Long Island entry-level planners (five or less years out of college or five years or less in a professional planning position) or graduate students in a planning-related major.

The $1,500 scholarship will cover the majority of expenses related to the conference registration, APA membership for one year for non-members, and some additional expenses.  Mr. Kunz spent most APA conferences attending as many mobile workshops as possible and believed in the value of seeing planning in action in other parts of the country.  Therefore, a portion of the scholarship is to be used to pay for participation in least one mobile workshop.

If you are an entry level planner working on Long Island or a graduate student of planning or a related field from Long Island and wish to apply for a scholarship to attend the 2012 APA Los Angeles conference, please send a letter of interest and your resume to APALongIsland@gmail.com.
