The focal point of this program is a Storm Readiness Assessment, which aims to collect data to determine if Long Islanders are better prepared for natural disasters since Superstorm Sandy.   • In collaboration with the Long Island Housing Partnership, Touro Law’s Aging & Longevity Institute, and the American Planning Association, the Institute is hosting a program on Land Use & Zoning for Fair and Accessible Housing on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, from 9 am – 2:30 pm.   • Our Bagels with the Boards programs will feature speakers on the future of sign regulations after Reed v. Town of Gilbert, planning for disaster resilience, the power of eminent domain, religious land uses, and more. The dates for our fall Bagels programs are Friday Sept. 25, Oct. 30, and Nov. 20. As always, the programs begin with continental breakfast at 8:30 am and the substantive presentation runs from 9-10 am.
  • Please also save the date for our Second Annual Long Island Coastal Resilience Summit on Friday, March 11, 2016. The theme of this year’s summit is Resilience Oriented Development. The program will feature speakers on the integration of transit-oriented and resilience-oriented development, planning and zoning for renewable energy, overcoming wastewater management constraints, an update on the latest climate projections for the region, and more.

IMG_03172015 APA Northeast Planning Conference:  Getting Ahead of the Future!

American Planning Association’s Northeast Regional Conference is in beautiful Saratoga Springs from June 26-28, 2015. We expect that over 700 architects, engineers, attorneys, government officials and other industry professionals from the nine states in Region 1 will attend.

‘Getting Ahead of the Future’ is this year’s conference theme and it will include a keynote address from Chris Leinberger, President of Locus; Responsible Real Estate Developers and Investors. Also included are special sessions on demographics and emerging trends, nearly 40 educational programs, ten mobile workshops, and terrific networking events.

Faculty: Christopher B. Fisher, Charles J. Gottlieb and Anthony F. Morando, of Cuddy & Feder LLP, concentrate their practices in telecommunications, land use and zoning, and have been counsel in precedent setting cases involving nuanced areas of zoning and claims under the Federal Communications Act. Christopher Fisher is Chairman of the firm’s Telecommunications Department and a past Chairman of the firm’s Land Use department.
Program: Municipalities are seeing increased deployment of wireless communications infrastructure to address the explosion in data use and demand for mobile broadband. The need for in-building systems, small cells, towers and facilities will continue to result in wireless facility deployment. To harness these advancements and growth in technology, municipalities must fully understand recent developments in Federal law to ensure that their local codes are not only compliant with the most recent Federal policy, but properly balance their own administrative burdens with the nature of the infrastructure being deployed. Tools to aid in the deployment of wireless infrastructure includes as-of-right sites, town wide planning, amendment of local laws including zoning regulations, as well as development of ongoing policies at the municipal level including use of municipal rights-of-way and properties.

Faculty: Jessica Bacher is the Executive Director of Pace Law School’s Land Use Law Center, an Adjunct Professor of Law at Pace Law School, and a guest lecturer and project supervisor at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, where she also manages the School’s Land Use Clinic. Ms. Bacher authors land use features in New York and national publications and has edited numerous books in the fields of Land Use and Real Estate Law.
Program: This presentation will review strategies and best practices for developing a clear, comprehensive, and enforceable solar regulatory framework. The presentation will present sample provisions for permitted uses, dimensional standards, development standards and definitions. In addition, optional provisions, such as solar access and solar ready home requirements will be reviewed. Policymakers who attend will be eligible to receive complementary one-on-one technical support in designing and implementing smart solar policy in their local jurisdiction. Policymakers who attend the Solar Energy program will be eligible to receive complementary one-on-one technical support in designing and implementing smart solar policy in their local jurisdiction.
Each program is certified for 1 CLE credit (Professional Practice) and has certification pending for 1 AICP-CM Credit (Law for the May 29 program; general for the June – program).
The cost for each program is $15 per person, including materials, and continental breakfast. Members of sponsor organizations including the Metro New York Chapter of the American Planning Association are eligible for a discounted rate of $10.

Third Annual APA/ASLA/AIA Joint Conference – June 12th, 2015
“Community Engagement in the Design Process”

The June Conference is an annual one-day interdisciplinary event jointly organized by the New York Metro Chapters of the American Planning Association (APA), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Now in its third year, the 2015 Conference will explore the role played by community groups in collaborative planning and design processes. This event will investigate how design professionals, public sector agencies, non-profits and related organizations can effectively engage the public to inform context-specific decision-making for the betterment of projects. Participants will hear from experienced practitioners and stakeholders in a morning panel discussion. The afternoon session will examine case studies and end with an insightful guided tour of a project site.  The event will be highlighted by keynote speeches from (1) Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and (2) Nilda Mesa, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability.

On May 15th, the APA Long Island Section will hold its annual Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarship Breakfast between 8:00 AM  and 10:30 AM at Molloy College’s Suffolk Center at Republic Airport (see directions).  Each year, the best and brightest of Long Island’s future and young planners strive for the Arthur Kunz Scholarship, which allows for the recipient to attend the annual American Planning Association Conference.

Kristy Senatori,Deputy Director, and Erin Perry, Special Projects Coordinator for the Cape Cod Commission will speak to the Cape’s plans for water quality management. Like Suffolk County and parts of Nassau County, nitrogen from septic systems has impaired Cape Cod’s coastal waters, which are critical to the area’s economy. The Cape Cod Commission is completing a Regional Wastewater Management Plan and an update to the Section 208 Area-wide Water Quality Management Plan. The plans introduce residents and policy makers to the science, the challenges, and the potential solutions for managing wastewater in an efficient and cost-effective way.
