How New York Law Allows the Ticking Clock to Run the Zoning Process by Gregory R. Alvarez, Esq. of Amato Law Group, PLLC.

The land use entitlement process in New York can be a lengthy ordeal, for the applicant, municipality and interested members of the public. Regardless of the degree of difficulty or complexity of an application, the municipal zoning approval process often takes what feels to all involved to be an inordinately long time. Although ingrained processes within municipal building and planning departments can inadvertently delay applications, program faculty Gregory R. Alvarez notes that state law is actually at the core of this problem.

APA National Planning Conference, NYC, May 6-9, 2017

Application Deadline Extended to 4:00pm Friday, February 17, 2017

This year’s Arthur Kunz Memorial Scholarship application period is open through February 10, 2017.  The APA National Planning Conference is held in a different city each year and this coming year will be held in New York City. The Long Island Section would like to promote attendance and professional development by providing additional grants to Long Island planners.

Therefore, this year the Section is dedicating additional funds to provide scholarship grants to professional planners as well as new planners and students.  At least three scholarships will be awarded to students/new professionals, and additional grants will be accessible to all Long Island planners.

If you are interested in applying for scholarship funds, please complete the application form (download below), and return to the Long Island Section Scholarship Committee at: ArthurKunzScholarship@gmail.com by 4:00pm on February 17, 2017 (application deadline extended from February 10, 2017).

Join the Young Planners Group (YPG) Mentorship Program as it celebrates its 8th year in the APA NY Metro Chapter. This unique professional development opportunity is made available to planning practitioners of all experience levels and second-year graduate students. The program is free for mentors and there is a $30 fee for mentees to support group activities. There is no fee to apply to the program. Only those mentee applicants who are selected to participate in the Mentorship Program will be required to pay the $30 non-refundable fee. In addition to the annual Arthur Kunz Memorial Breakfast and East End Planning Conference (traditionally held in late Spring and early Fall, respectively), the LI Section is looking to its members for suggestions on smaller key events/sessions that will provide value to junior and experienced planners working in the region.

Walk with us! Join APA as we explore vibrant Port Jefferson which enjoys a bustling waterfront and an active downtown mix of expanding residential units, shops, restaurants, industry uses, high-speed ferry, and a waterfront park and Village Center. Learn about the Village’s wide-sweeping planning initiatives including the Village’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan and the Waterfront Revitalization Plan as well as the history of the Village Center and Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park. Mayor Margot Garant will be our guide for the tour. Afterwards talk with us and network at Old Fields Restaurant! Meet in front of the entrance of the Port Jefferson Village Center, 101-A East Broadway, Port Jefferson (just east of the Ferry) at 4:30 pm.

Meet at Village of Great Neck Plaza, Village Hall, 2 Gussack Plaza (cross streets are Cutter Mill Road and Middle Neck Road).  Free parking is available in Plaza Centre Garage on the rooftop.
